The Youth Forum on "Sustainable
Development: Making Choices for Our Future" was held
on 5 December 2004. Jointly convened by the Council for Sustainable
Development and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups -
Leadership 21, the forum provided a platform for young people
to share their views on sustainable development, in particular
with reference to the three Pilot Areas of Solid Waste Management,
Renewable Energy and Urban Living Space covered in the Council
for Sustainable Development's "Invitation and Response"
(IR) document.
Over
300 young people comprising senior secondary school students,
university students and recent graduates took part in the
forum. They took a keen part in an interactive workshop and
subsequent group discussion on Hong Kong's key sustainability
issues, as well as suggesting their top ten priorities for
Hong Kong's sustainability. A list of the "Sustainability
Top Ten" can be downloaded here.
The participants' ideas and comments
on the IR document are of particular value, as providing a
sustainable society for future generations is one of the key
principles of sustainable development. The views of the young
people who attended the forum will help to shape the advice
that the Council for Sustainable Development will give to
the Government on the way forward for sustainable policies
for Hong Kong.
