Learning about "sustainable development" in carnival setting

*********************************************************

A carnival with the theme of "Sustainability and the Community" will be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza in Tsim Sha Tsui from 10 am to 6 pm tomorrow (January 18).

Organised by the Sustainable Development Unit of the Administration Wing, the carnival aims to encourage public interest in and promote awareness of sustainable development in a relaxed and "hands-on" way.

More than twenty environmental, business and social groups, Government departments and schools have helped to put together the game booths and performing arts shows that will be the main features of the event.

In different and creative ways, the carnival will convey the message that, to be sustainable, development must balance economic, environmental and social considerations with the aim of improving the quality of life in our city.

For example, one booth will highlight how being a "wise boss" contributes to sustainable development in the workplace. There will also be displays of local wildlife and plants, interactive games promoting renewable energy, recycling of refuse and reuse of materials, and a "sustainable" bus.

At the carnival's dedication ceremony, the Sustainable development Unit and the eight co-organisers of the event will each present a 30-word "vision" for sustainable development. The co-organisers are: the Business Environment Council, Hong Kong Friends of the Earth, Green Power, Hong Kong Rehabilitation Power, Mass Transit Railway Corporation, The Boys' and Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong, The Conservancy Association and Zuni Icosahedron.

Members of the public are invited to join the carnival. Entry and all games are free of charge.
