Chief Executive appoints Council for Sustainable Development *********************************************************
The Government announced today (February 27) that the Chief Executive had made the following appointments to the Council for Sustainable Development with effect from March 1, 2003 for a term of two years -
Chief Secretary for Administration (Chairman) Dr Edgar Cheng, GBS, JP (Vice-chairman) Dr Lily Chiang Ms Choy So-yuk Mr Barrie Cook Ms Christine Fang Mr Hans Michael Jebsen, BBS Mr Thomas Kwok, JP Professor Lam Kin-che, JP Mr Andrew Liao, SBS, SC, JP Mr Otto Poon Mr Tai Hay-lap, JP Mr Tik Chi-yuen, JP Professor Tsui Lap-chee Secretary for Economic Development and Labour Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food Secretary for Housing, Planning and Lands
A Government spokesman said that the Council membership represented a balanced mix of stakeholders from the key sectors of business, social service and environmental conservation.
"We look forward to working closely with the Council in tackling issues aimed at promoting sustainability in Hong Kong," the spokesman said.
The Council will provide a focus and a forum for exchanging views on key issues related to Hong Kong's long-term sustainable development.
"The Council is expected to have its first meeting towards the end of March," said the spokesman. Members will be invited to consider the Council's work programme, which will include the establishment of the Sustainable Development Fund and matters related to the consideration of a sustainable development strategy for Hong Kong.
The Sustainable Development Unit under the Chief Secretary for Administration's Office will provide secretariat support to the Council.
